Teaching Philosophy- Empowering Students through Theater
As a Theater major and Social Justice and Human Rights minor, my teaching philosophy centers on creating an inclusive, engaging, and nurturing environment where students of all backgrounds and abilities can thrive. Theater is a transformative art form that empowers individuals, fosters creativity, and builds essential life skills. I approach teaching with a commitment to:
- Diverse Learning Through Intersectionality-Theater is a reflection of the human experience, and it thrives when we embrace the intersectional identities of our students. I approach teaching with the understanding that students bring unique cultural, social, and personal perspectives to the classroom. By integrating stories and practices from various backgrounds and ensuring that all voices are represented, I create a learning environment that values equity and inclusion. Through activities that encourage students to explore their identities and collaborate with others, I aim to foster empathy and an appreciation for the rich diversity of the world around them.
- Confidence Building- Theater builds confidence by encouraging students to step out of their comfort zones. I create opportunities for students to express themselves, take creative risks, and celebrate their progress. Through constructive feedback and a supportive atmosphere, I empower students to trust their abilities, embrace challenges, and find pride in their work.
- Relationship Building in a Safe Space- A successful theater classroom is a safe space where respect and collaboration are important. I prioritize fostering positive relationships between students and between students and teachers. By creating a community where everyone feels valued and heard, students can freely explore their creativity and form meaningful connections that extend beyond the classroom.
This philosophy reflects my belief that theater is not only an art but a tool for personal growth, inclusivity, and community-building.
